A blindfolded woman sits before a still ocean, two large swords crossed over her chest. She is blocking both feeling (the water) and sight. The impasse is of her own making — or at least, her own maintaining. The decision that needs making is clear to everyone except her.

Reversed, information arrives that breaks the stalemate — but it may be unwelcome. The blindfold slips; what was blocked from view becomes visible.

Upright

Make the decision you've been avoiding. The discomfort of choosing is less than the accumulated cost of not choosing. Remove the blindfold, however briefly.

Reversed

Receive what is being revealed even if it's uncomfortable. The stalemate needed to break.

Two swords crossed is a classical image of stalemate and treaty — a pause in conflict. In this context, it has turned inward: the battle is now between the mind and the heart.

The blindfold is self-imposed. Removing it is uncomfortable; the swords are heavy. But the stalemate will not resolve itself.
