A radiant sun fills the sky above a joyful naked child riding a white horse, arms outstretched. Sunflowers bloom on the garden wall behind. The child has passed through the night (The Moon) and emerged into full, unambiguous light. This is pure joy — not naive, but earned. The world is clear; life is good.

Reversed, the sun is partly clouded. Joy is temporarily blocked — by depression, pessimism, or an inflation of ego that mistakes radiance for superiority. The light is still there; something is filtering it.

Upright

Celebrate. Share your warmth. This is one of the most unambiguously positive cards in the deck. Whatever you've been working toward has the light behind it now.

Reversed

Do small things that bring genuine, uncomplicated pleasure. The sun always rises; cloud cover is temporary.

The Sun was associated with Apollo and with the alchemical gold — the "Sol" — in Hermetic tradition. Waite's child on a horse deliberately echoes the Fool's innocence, but here the innocence is reborn after experience rather than untested.

Joy can be dismissed as simplistic. Don't let cynicism or habit talk you out of genuine happiness.
