The Hierophant

The Hierophant sits between two pillars, wearing papal robes and triple crown. Two devotees kneel before him; he raises one hand in blessing while the other holds a three-crossed staff. Keys of heaven lie crossed at his feet. He represents the bridge between the sacred and the worldly — received wisdom, ritual, and the comfort of tradition.

Reversed, the Hierophant signals a break from convention — or a warning that blind obedience has become harmful. It may be time to forge your own spiritual path, or to challenge an institution that has lost its integrity.

Upright

Seek a mentor, teacher, or established tradition. Sometimes the wisdom of centuries is more reliable than personal revelation alone. Learn the rules before you break them.

Reversed

Trust your own spiritual experience. You don't need permission from an institution to have a relationship with the sacred.

Originally "Il Papa" — the Pope himself — in early Italian decks. Waite renamed him to avoid Catholic offence and expanded him to represent all organised spiritual tradition, not just Rome.

Question whether you're following rules because they serve you, or out of fear of stepping outside them. Tradition is a tool, not a cage.
