The Hanged Man
Upright Meaning
A man hangs upside down from a living T-shaped tree, one leg bent behind the other in a relaxed figure-four. His face is serene, surrounded by a halo of light. He has chosen to hang there — not as punishment but as a willing pause. From upside down, the world looks entirely different.
Reversed Meaning
Reversed, the Hanged Man's surrender has curdled into stalling. The pause has gone on too long; the sacrifice is being made without real inner work, becoming mere martyrdom or procrastination.
Guidance & Advice
Upright
Surrender to the pause. Stop pushing. The insight you need cannot be forced — it arrives only when you stop grasping. Change your perspective; hang with it a while.
Reversed
If insight has arrived, act on it. The suspension phase is over. Or — if you're just avoiding — admit it and take the next step.
History & Symbolism
Derived from Odin hanging on Yggdrasil for nine days to gain the wisdom of the runes — sacrifice in exchange for gnosis. Also linked to treason-punishment imagery in Italian cities (enemies were depicted hanging from one leg). Waite merged both traditions into voluntary spiritual sacrifice.
What to Look Out For
Check whether waiting is wisdom or avoidance. The Hanged Man chooses his suspension; it is not happening to him.
