The Fool stands at the edge of a cliff, face lifted to the sun, a small pack over one shoulder and a white rose in hand. He is about to step into the unknown — not from recklessness but from pure trust. The mountains behind him represent conquered challenges; the abyss ahead holds infinite possibility. In tarot, he is zero: the void before creation, every journey’s first breath.

Reversed, The Fool's boundless spirit tips into recklessness. The leap is taken without looking. There may be a refusal to grow up, a dangerous naïvety, or impulsive choices that ignore consequence. The white rose has wilted; the dog bites instead of warns.

Upright

Take the leap — but pack wisely. Begin what you've been postponing. Trust the path will appear beneath your feet, yet stay alert to the ground.

Reversed

Slow down before you leap. Gather more information. The adventure is still worth taking, but this time, look before you step.

Originally called "Il Matto" (The Madman) in 15th-century Italian decks, The Fool was unnumbered or placed last. Waite moved him to 0, making him both origin and potential, pre-cosmic and unbounded.

Watch for naïvety clouding your judgment. The Fool's optimism is his gift, but the cliff is real. Ask whether enthusiasm has replaced discernment.
