A warrior stands in a stone chariot pulled by two sphinxes — one black, one white. He wears armour adorned with moons and alchemical symbols; a canopy of stars stretches above him. He holds no reins; the chariot is steered by pure will and the integration of opposites. The city is behind him; the journey ahead.

Reversed, the sphinxes pull in opposite directions and the chariot careens. Internal conflict, lack of self-discipline, or aggression without direction undoes everything the warrior has built.

Upright

Harness your competing drives and charge forward. This is the card of disciplined momentum. Stop deliberating and commit to the direction you've chosen.

Reversed

Stop. Reassess your direction. Victory by brute force often costs more than it gains. Find alignment before pressing forward.

Rooted in the Roman triumph — the general's victory parade — the Chariot represents martial success elevated to spiritual discipline. Waite's version draws heavily from Kabbalistic symbolism and the Hermetic idea of the Will as the highest faculty.

Willpower alone can become stubbornness. The Chariot wins through focus, not brute force. Make sure you know where you're going.
