A cloaked figure stands over three spilled cups, head bowed in grief. But behind him stand two cups still upright. He has suffered a real loss — the grief is legitimate. But all his attention is on what was lost, and he cannot yet see what remains.

Reversed, the figure is turning around. The grief is being processed; forgiveness — of self or others — is becoming possible. The two cups are coming into view.

Upright

Allow yourself to grieve fully. Then, when you're ready — not before — turn around. What remains is enough to begin again.

Reversed

Trust your own timing for healing. The direction is right; keep turning.

Five disrupts stability in any suit. In Cups, the disruption is emotional loss. Waite depicted loss as real but not total — the two standing cups are a deliberate symbol of hope.

Grief requires its due time. But at some point, the mourning must allow the eyes to lift to the two cups still standing.
