A figure walks away at night, moving toward dark mountains. Behind him stand eight cups, arranged but with a gap where a ninth might be. A waning moon lights the path. He is not fleeing — he is deliberately leaving something behind because, despite its appearance of completeness, it no longer serves him.

Reversed, the figure hesitates to leave or drifts without direction after leaving. The departure either doesn't happen or leaves the person without a clear path forward.

Upright

If something has genuinely run its course — a relationship, a role, a belief — honour the ending by leaving with intention rather than waiting for collapse.

Reversed

Be honest about why you're staying or going. Clarity of motive is the only thing that makes either choice right.

Eight brings the suit close to its fullest expression, but in Cups, that expression reveals an incompleteness. The departure is mature, deliberate, and quiet.

Leaving is not always failure. Sometimes the bravest thing is recognising that a cup is empty and walking away from it.
